Yufuin Onsen
Hello everyone!
With Autumn’s cooler weather fast approaching, we can once again start looking forward to soaking in one of
Oita’s abundant onsen hot springs.
While we could recommend many places in Oita’s rich onsen region to visit, Yufuin’s hot spring culture,
traditional accommodations, shopping, and outdoor activities make this onsen resort town one of our top picks
for both first-timers and long-time onsen lovers alike.
Unlike the urban landscape of Beppu, its famous onsen sibling, Yufuin exists in the tranquil setting of bucolic
fields, grassy knolls, and stunning views of Mt. Yufu, the beloved natural landmark of Yufuin. Outdoor activity
lovers and hikers can make the trek up Mt. Yufu for its spectacular views before rewarding their hard work with a relaxing soak in Yufuin’s prized hot springs.
While you could spend a day (or two) in Yufuin’s baths, we wouldn’t blame you for venturing out on the town to explore its world-class highlights. Start your visit at Yufuin’s striking tourist center designed by world-renowned architect Shigeru Ban before wandering up and down Yunotsubo Kaido Street for an afternoon of eating,
shopping, and people-watching.
If you’re in the mood for art, COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN combines contemporary art and architecture in a
space designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. This museum is a contemporary art-lover’s dream, featuring works by Takashi Murakami, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Yoshitomo Nara’s iconic doe-eyed dog statue on the
museum’s top deck.
For early risers, the cool mornings of Autumn and Winter turn Lake Kinrin into a mystical vision as underground hot springs create an otherworldly mist over the lake surface.
At your day’s end, you can always count on a hot bath to help you unwind after a day of adventure and
exploration. So, with the promise of steaming hot springs and warm hearts, we eagerly await your visit to Oita to enjoy these hot springs for yourselves.
