Summer Seasonal Tips in Oita
Hello everyone!
How's everyone dealing with the hot summer weather? Over here in Japan, the temperatures have reached the mid-thirty degree mark, causing many of us to seek relief from the heat. Luckily, Japan has some creative (and
even tasty) ways to stay cool and hydrated to help get through the hot season in comfort.
Anyone familiar with summer treats in Japan will know about kakigori, one of Japan's top traditional summer
treats. This shaved ice treat is a summer mainstay, with many cafes and dessert shops switching to their
summer menus of kakigori shaved ice with flavors such as strawberry, melon, and matcha green tea. However, when you're in Oita, you'll have to try our local kabosu flavor. The Oita climate is particularly suitable for growing this green citrus, and the sour-sweet taste is just the thing to get your Oita-themed refreshment in the
summertime.
While you're enjoying that summer dessert, you may hear the sounds of wind chimes that announce the arrival of a cooling breeze. The sound of the chimes is said to help convince your brain that you're nice and cool!
Whatever the case, we think these chimes are the perfect Oita souvenir and beautiful and practical summer
decoration to add above your doorstep.
Let's not forget Japanese fans and parasols to help with the heat. Locals in Oita sport an array of fan and
parasol designs, from patterned folding fans, moon-shaped fans, to UV-protected parasols, inspirations for your summer accessories.
While the heat may sound daunting at first, a visit to Japan during the summer months will give you a chance to experience the seasonal summer treats, crafts, and accessories as locals get to enjoy them in Oita. So, we
encourage you to visit during this time! We look forward to when we can offer up these tasty summer treats and share our experiences of Japanese summer life on your next visit!
