Kumano Magaibutsu 6
The Kumano Magaibutsu stone carvings are located at the top of a steep stone staircase, said to have been built by demons in a single night. These carvings, among the largest of their kind in Japan, are designated as Important Cultural Properties and date back to the late Heian period. On the sheer cliff face, you'll find two impressive figures: the Dainichi Nyorai (approximately 6.7 meters tall) on the right, with a serene and composed expression, and the Fudo Myo-o (approximately 8 meters tall) on the left, whose features appear almost to smile. Their natural integration into the surrounding landscape makes them seem as if they have always been part of the environment. Climbing further up the steps leads to Kumano Shrine, while descending takes you to Taizo-ji Temple. ■ A multilingual Wi-Fi audio guide is available via "jaj.jp" for an enhanced visitor experience.
