Nioza Historical Path and Historic Shinko-ji Temple（ Shinko Temple）5
Located at the foot of Usuki Castle, the Nioza District sits atop a tuff hill formed from compacted volcanic ash from Mount Aso. Pathways were carved directly into the rock, creating narrow alleys that retain the distinct atmosphere of a traditional castle town. High stone walls, imposing tiled roofs, white plaster buildings, and numerous temples line the slopes, evoking a sense of historical charm. One of Usuki's most iconic sights is the "Kiritoshi," located in front of the old Shinko-ji Temple. The wet stone pavement after a rain adds a particularly atmospheric touch to the area. In November 1993, the Nioza District was selected as one of the Top 100 Urban Landscapes in Japan, a testament to its cultural and aesthetic significance.
